Mandatory V-16 Connected Beacons

Mandatory V-16 Connected Beacons: 2026

The Digital Revolution of Roadside Safety

This page is for car owners in Spain who will have to change from using a warning triangle to using a small magnetic warning beacon which will stick to the roof of the car.   The beacon will automatically contact the authorities to tell them that you have a problem.  The beacon has a sim card.

If you are a visitor to Spain and you hire a car your car should be equipped with one of these devices. If you break down just take out the beacon and press the button button on the top. It will emit a strong flashing light that is visible for a long way.

Note that it won't contact a breakdown recovery for you. If you break down then you should look at the documentation from the car hire company and phone the number provided.

Starting January 1, 2026, traditional hazard warning triangles will be permanently retired. Every vehicle registered must instead carry a DGT-Approved Connected V-16 Beacon. This is an IoT (Internet of Things) safety device designed to save lives through "virtual visibility."

Why the Change?

The transition aims to reduce mortality rates for drivers who exit their vehicles to place warning triangles. On high-speed roads, walking behind a car is extremely hazardous. The V-16 beacon is placed on the roof via a magnetic base without the driver ever having to leave the car.

The Concept of "Virtual Visibility"

When activated, the "Connected" V-16 beacon uses an integrated eSIM to send GPS coordinates to the DGT 3.0 Cloud. This data is broadcasted in real-time to:

  • Connected vehicles approaching your position.
  • Variable message signs on the highway.
  • Navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps.

Technical Specifications

Visibility: 360° up to 1km
Battery: 30 min active (min)
Network: NB-IoT / 4G / 5G
Durability: IP54 Rating

Privacy & Data Security

A common concern is vehicle tracking. According to the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD):

  • No Tracking: The device only transmits data when physically turned ON during an emergency.
  • Anonymity: The signal sends a technical ID and GPS point only; it is not linked to your personal data or phone number.
  • No Subscription: Connectivity is pre-paid by the manufacturer for at least 12 years.

Fines & Penalties

Failure to carry a certified, connected beacon after January 1, 2026, is a serious traffic violation:

  • Non-compliance Fine: Between €80 and €200.
  • Exemptions: Currently mandatory for cars, vans, and trucks. Highly recommended (but not yet mandatory) for motorcycles.
Important: Ensure your device features the official DGT Homologation code.
