The "Mustard Scam" (a.k.a. Bird Poop Scam)
This is a common distraction theft that targets tourists in popular European cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, and Paris.
How the Scam Works
- Distraction: A stranger sprays a substance (like mustard, fake bird poop, or yogurt) on your back or shoulder.
Helpful Stranger: An accomplice pretends to notice it and offers to help clean it off.
Theft: While you're distracted, your phone, wallet, or bag is quietly stolen.
Where It Happens
- Outside tourist landmarks
- In metro stations or on busy sidewalks
- In parks or café areas
How to Protect Yourself
- Wear your backpack in front or use an anti-theft bag.
- Decline unsolicited help, even if it seems polite.
- Move away and check your belongings discreetly.
Report incidents to local police if you suspect a scam.
