Biography: Miguel de Cervantes

Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes was a Spanish writer, poet, and playwright. He is best known for his novel Don Quixote, which is considered to be one of the most influential works of literature ever written. Cervantes was born on September 29, 1547 in Alcalá de Henares, a city near Madrid. His father was a surgeon and his mother was a housekeeper. Cervantes had one brother, Rodrigo, who was a soldier. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Spanish Navy and served for four years in the Mediterranean. During this time, he was captured by the Turks and held as a prisoner for five years. Upon his return to Spain, he began writing plays, poems, and other works of literature.

Cervantes wrote several plays, of which the most famous is the "Teatro del laberinto de amor". This play was a comedic work about the turbulent life of a young man and his love for a beautiful woman. He also wrote several short stories, such as "La Gitanilla" and "La española inglesa". He wrote some historical works, such as "Historia de los bandos de la ciudad de Madrid". His greatest work, however, was the novel Don Quixote, which was published in two parts in 1605 and 1615.

The novel follows the adventures of a middle-aged man, Alonso Quixano, who has read so many chivalric romances that he decides to become a knight and set out on adventures. Along the way, he meets a wide range of characters, from giants to windmills, and has a number of interesting adventures. The novel is considered to be an important work of Spanish literature, and has been translated into many languages.

Cervantes died in 1616, and was buried in the Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians in Madrid. His works have had a lasting influence on Spanish and world literature. He is remembered as one of the greatest writers of all time.
