Interesting Facts About the Spanish Postal Code System

1. Structure of Spanish Postcodes

Spanish postal codes are 5 digits long (e.g., 28001 for Madrid).

  • The first two digits represent the province (e.g., 28 for Madrid, 08 for Barcelona).
  • The last three digits specify the town, district, or delivery area.

2. Province-Based System

Each of Spainโ€™s 50 provinces has a unique first two digits:

  • 08XXX  Barcelona
  • 28XXX  Madrid
  • 41XXX  Seville

Provinces were assigned their codes alphabetically based on their old Spanish names.

3. Capital Cities Usually Have "001"

The main post office in each provincial capital often has a postal code ending in 001.

  • Madrid = 28001
  • Barcelona = 08001
  • Valencia = 46001

4. Special Post Codes

Some organizations and government institutions have unique postal codes:

  • Moncloa Palace (Spanish Prime Ministerโ€™s Office) = 28071
  • Royal Palace of Madrid = 28071
  • Spanish Tax Agency = 28080

5. Ceuta and Melilla Have Their Own Codes

  • Ceuta = 51XXX
  • Melilla = 52XXX

6. No Letters, Only Numbers

Unlike some countries (e.g., the UK or Canada), Spanish postcodes contain only numbers.

7. Large Cities Have Multiple Postal Codes

Big cities like Madrid and Barcelona have many postal codes due to their size.

  • Madrid Chamartรญn district = 28036
  • Madrid Retiro district = 28009
  • Barcelona Eixample = 08011

8. The Canary Islands Use Province Codes

Even though the Canary Islands are far from mainland Spain, their postcodes still follow the province system:

  • Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) = 35XXX
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife = 38XXX
